Software Engineering Intern – Summer 2027
Location: 11075 Roselle Street, San Diego, CA 92121
Pay: $20–$30 per hour
Job type: Internship, Full-time
Duration: 8–12 weeks, Summer 2027
About Fabric8Labs
Fabric8Labs, headquartered in San Diego, CA, is revolutionizing advanced manufacturing with next-generation 3D printing technology. Our patented Electrochemical Additive Manufacturing (ECAM) process enables new approaches to manufacturing complex metal components.
We are looking for a Software Engineering Intern to join our engineering team for an 8–12 week internship during Summer 2027.
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on software engineering internship for students excited about writing software that controls real machines.
You will work alongside our Software, Electrical, Systems, and Mechanical Engineering teams to develop and improve the software that operates our ECAM printers. Projects may include machine controls, hardware interfaces, automation, data acquisition, system diagnostics, and tools used to operate and troubleshoot our equipment.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and test software used to control and operate ECAM printers.
- Build interfaces between software and physical hardware, including sensors, motors, controllers, and other machine subsystems.
- Develop tools for machine automation, calibration, diagnostics, and data collection.
- Debug software and system-level issues directly on engineering and production hardware.
- Collect and analyze machine data to improve performance, reliability, and troubleshooting.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- Work directly with engineers and technicians to integrate, test, and iterate on new functionality.
- Collaborate with Software, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering.
- Own a defined engineering project and present your work at the conclusion of the internship.
What We’re Looking For
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Expected graduation date in 2028 or 2029.
- Strong interest in machine control, robotics, automation, hardware/software integration, or advanced manufacturing.
- Experience programming in Python, C++, C#, or similar languages through coursework, personal projects, clubs, or previous internships.
- Interest in working directly with physical hardware—not just writing software in isolation.
- Familiarity with Linux, Git, networking, databases, or industrial communication protocols is a plus.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated and excited to take software from code → machine → test → iteration.
Why Fabric8Labs?
You’ll work on real machines alongside engineers developing and scaling next-generation manufacturing equipment. This isn’t an internship where you’ll spend the summer working on isolated exercises—we’re looking for students who want to write code, control hardware, debug machines, analyze data, and see their software come to life on the factory floor.
Fabric8Labs provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to any characteristic protected by federal, state, or local laws.
Application Questions
- Will you now, or in the future, require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H-1B visa status)?
- Are you interested in a full-time (30+ hrs/week) internship?
- Our internship program will be held over Summer 2027, and interns will be required to be available for the entire length of the program, 8–12 weeks. If extended an offer, when would you be able to start?
- Are you currently enrolled and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering, computer science, or another relevant engineering field?
- When do you expect to be available for full-time (permanent) work?
Ability to commute: San Diego, CA 92121 (Required)
Work location: In person
