About the role
Mechanical Engineering Intern – Summer 2027
Location: 11075 Roselle Street, San Diego, CA 92121
Pay: $20–$30 per hour
Job type: Internship, Full-time
Duration: 8–12 weeks, Summer 2027
About Fabric8Labs
Fabric8Labs, headquartered in San Diego, CA, is revolutionizing advanced manufacturing with next-generation 3D printing technology. Our patented Electrochemical Additive Manufacturing (ECAM) process enables new approaches to manufacturing complex metal components.
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our engineering team for an 8–12 week internship during Summer 2027.
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on engineering internship for students who are excited about designing, building, and testing machines.
You will work alongside our Mechanical and cross-functional engineering teams to design and improve components, mechanisms, tooling, and subsystems for our ECAM printers. You’ll have the opportunity to take ideas from CAD to physical hardware, build and test your designs, and iterate based on what you learn.
What You’ll Do
- Design mechanical components, assemblies, fixtures, and mechanisms for ECAM printers and supporting equipment.
- Create 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and prototype designs.
- Build, assemble, and test mechanical and electromechanical systems.
- Perform engineering testing to evaluate designs and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement design improvements.
- Work directly with engineers and technicians to rapidly prototype and iterate on new concepts.
- Participate in design reviews and collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Manufacturing, and Production teams.
- Own a defined engineering project and present your work at the conclusion of the internship.
What We’re Looking For
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- Expected graduation date in 2028 or 2029.
- Strong interest in machine design, hardware development, robotics, automation, or advanced manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience building mechanical or electromechanical systems through coursework, personal projects, clubs, competitions, or previous internships.
- Experience with 3D CAD; SolidWorks experience is a plus.
- Comfortable using tools and working directly with physical hardware.
- Strong mechanical intuition, problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn.
- Self-motivated and excited to take a design from concept → build → test → iteration.
Why Fabric8Labs?
You’ll work on real hardware alongside engineers developing and scaling next-generation manufacturing equipment. This isn’t an internship where you’ll spend the summer watching from the sidelines—we’re looking for students who want to design things, build things, break things, learn why they broke, and make them better.
