Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering Intern – Summer 2027
Location: 11075 Roselle Street, San Diego, CA 92121
Pay: $20–$30 per hour
Job type: Internship, Full-time
Duration: 10 weeks, Summer 2027
About Fabric8Labs
Fabric8Labs, headquartered in San Diego, CA, is revolutionizing advanced manufacturing with next-generation 3D printing technology. Our patented Electrochemical Additive Manufacturing (ECAM) process uses precise, room-temperature metal deposition to unlock geometries and applications that conventional metal additive manufacturing cannot reach.
As we continue to scale our technology and manufacturing capabilities, we are looking for a Manufacturing Engineering Intern to join our team for a 10-week internship during Summer 2027.
The Opportunity
As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you will work alongside our Manufacturing, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, and Production teams to help improve how our ECAM printers and subsystems are built, tested, and scaled.
This is a hands-on engineering internship. You will spend time both on the manufacturing floor and working directly with engineers to solve real production challenges. You will have the opportunity to contribute to projects involving manufacturing process development, tooling, production workflows, documentation, quality, and continuous improvement.
Over the course of the 10-week program, you will own a defined engineering project and present your results and recommendations to the engineering team at the conclusion of your internship.
What You’ll Do
- Support the build, test, and scale-up of ECAM printers, equipment, and electromechanical subsystems.
- Work directly with Manufacturing Engineering and Production to identify and solve manufacturing challenges.
- Develop and improve manufacturing processes, workflows, tooling, fixtures, and work instructions.
- Use data to identify opportunities to improve quality, yield, throughput, cycle time, and manufacturing efficiency.
- Assist with structured root-cause analysis and corrective actions for manufacturing issues.
- Participate in engineering and design reviews and provide a manufacturing perspective on new designs.
- Help develop and maintain manufacturing documentation, including SOPs, assembly instructions, production routers, and test procedures.
- Gain hands-on experience building and troubleshooting complex electromechanical equipment.
- Collaborate with engineers, technicians, production personnel, and other cross-functional teams.
- Own a meaningful manufacturing engineering project from problem definition through implementation and final presentation.
What We’re Looking For
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field.
- Expected graduation date in 2028 or 2029.
- Strong interest in manufacturing, automation, hardware, additive manufacturing, or production engineering.
- Comfortable working hands-on with mechanical and electromechanical equipment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to learn quickly and work effectively in a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate across engineering and production teams.
- Self-motivated and comfortable taking ownership of an engineering project.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous internship, project, lab, Formula SAE, robotics, makerspace, or other hands-on engineering experience.
- Familiarity with CAD and engineering drawings.
- Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, time studies, process mapping, or other continuous improvement methods.
- Experience with manufacturing processes, tooling/fixture design, assembly, machining, automation, or electromechanical systems.
- Familiarity with root-cause analysis, PFMEA, DfM/DfA, or other structured engineering methods is a plus.
What You’ll Gain
During your 10 weeks at Fabric8Labs, you will gain exposure to the challenges of taking advanced hardware from R&D into scaled manufacturing. You’ll work directly with engineers and production teams, gain hands-on experience with complex manufacturing equipment, and see how engineering decisions translate to the factory floor.
Most importantly, you won’t be working on a hypothetical intern project—you’ll have the opportunity to solve a real manufacturing problem and leave Fabric8Labs having made a measurable impact on our manufacturing operation.
Why Fabric8Labs?
We are a collaborative, cross-functional, and driven team working on cutting-edge technology and advanced manufacturing. Interns will have the opportunity to work directly with experienced engineers, contribute to meaningful projects, and gain exposure to multiple engineering disciplines in a rapidly growing technology company.
Fabric8Labs provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to any characteristic protected by federal, state, or local laws.
