About the role
We are seeking a qualified Children’s Social Worker to join a busy Duty and Assessment Team in Birmingham. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children and families by responding promptly to referrals, identifying risk and need, and ensuring that children receive the right support and protection at the right time.
You will be responsible for undertaking child and family assessments, managing a varied caseload and completing timely visits, recording and reports in line with statutory requirements. You will work with children, parents, carers and professionals to understand circumstances, assess strengths and risks, and develop clear plans that promote children’s safety, wellbeing and positive outcomes. Where necessary, you will initiate child protection procedures and contribute to decisions regarding accommodation, care planning and legal intervention.
The role involves responding to urgent and complex situations, participating in strategy discussions, attending child protection conferences and contributing to multi-agency meetings. You will build effective working relationships with schools, health services, police, family support providers and other partner agencies. A strong focus on direct work with children is essential, including ensuring that their wishes and feelings are heard and reflected in assessment and planning.
Applicants must hold a recognised Social Work qualification and current Social Work England registration, with relevant experience in children’s social care, safeguarding or an assessment and duty setting. You should have sound knowledge of statutory frameworks, child protection practice and effective risk assessment, together with the confidence to make professional decisions in challenging circumstances. A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle may be required. We are looking for a resilient, organised and reflective practitioner who can manage competing priorities, communicate clearly and work collaboratively. In return, you will receive an engaging caseload, opportunities for professional development and the support of an experienced team.
