Senior Full Stack Software Engineer (PHP / Laravel / React)

The successful candidate will join a small, collaborative engineering team in a senior, hands-on development role, taking ownership of substantial technical work from detailed design through to testing, deployment and production support.

Working within an established technical architecture and alongside experienced product, data and engineering colleagues, you'll have considerable autonomy in how you deliver your work, with a strong emphasis on code quality, reliability and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain applications using PHP, Laravel, React and TypeScript.
• Take ownership of complex development tasks, contributing to detailed technical design within the agreed architecture and delivering work across Laravel APIs and React applications.
• Deliver clean, maintainable and well-tested code that meets agreed technical standards.
• Investigate and resolve technical issues across applications, APIs, databases and supporting services.
• Work with PostgreSQL databases, including schema changes, query optimisation and migrations.
• Contribute to improving CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and deployment processes.
• Uphold and help improve established engineering standards, reviewing code and ensuring development work meets agreed quality requirements.
• Work closely with product, data and QA colleagues to understand requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.
• Contribute to technical improvements that enhance application performance, reliability and maintainability, working within the established architecture and technical direction.
• Independently manage production releases into AWS-hosted environments, maintaining deployment documentation and following established procedures for resolving or escalating operational issues.
• Identify opportunities to improve development practices and overall software quality.

Essential Skills & Experience

We're looking for an experienced Software Engineer with ideally 6+ years of commercial software development experience, including:

• PHP & Laravel: Strong commercial experience developing and maintaining production applications.
• React & TypeScript: Solid frontend development experience, with the ability to work confidently across the full stack.
• AWS: Experience deploying and supporting applications within AWS environments, ideally using serverless technologies.
• PostgreSQL: Strong relational database skills, including query optimisation, schema design and migrations.
• CI/CD: Experience with automated build, testing and deployment pipelines, ideally GitHub Actions.
• Testing: A strong understanding of automated testing, code quality and modern software development practices.
• Code reviews: Experience reviewing code and working with established development standards.
• Production deployments: At least two years of experience independently managing production releases, including troubleshooting deployment issues, handling rollbacks and supporting live applications.
• You should also be comfortable working with an existing codebase, understanding its architecture and making improvements without unnecessarily rebuilding established functionality.
