About the role

Humber Recruitment are urgently resourcing an Engineering Design Manager for Allied Protek based in Grimsby on a full-time basis.

Lead engineering design. Shape major projects. Help build the future of a growing business.
Are you an experienced engineer who enjoys bringing people, design and delivery together?
We are looking for an Engineering Design Manager to join our client’s growing team and take a leading role in the successful delivery of engineering design across a diverse portfolio of industrial projects.
You will lead and coordinate a team of multidisciplinary in-house designers, while managing external design partners and ensuring that design solutions are practical, buildable, compliant and commercially effective.
This is a key role within a growing business, offering the opportunity to influence how we deliver projects, develop our design capability and support our continued expansion into specialist industrial markets.
You will work closely with our construction, commercial, procurement and quality teams, as well as clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers. Your ability to see the bigger picture while maintaining control of design detail will be critical to your success.
What You’ll Be Doing
Design leadership

Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary internal design teams and external design partners.
Provide technical and design management input across multiple live projects.
Review design documentation, deliverables and design programmes to ensure quality and timely delivery.
Lead design and project review meetings, ensuring actions and decisions are clearly understood and progressed.
Support the Design Lead(s) in assessing design resources, outputs and priorities.
Coordinate design activities from concept through to construction and completion.

Project delivery & commercial value

Work closely with Project and Contracts Managers to ensure design supports successful project delivery.
Identify opportunities for value engineering, improved buildability and cost-effective solutions.
Identify design and project risks and develop appropriate mitigation and contingency plans.
Contribute to tenders and work-winning activities, providing design expertise and realistic design programmes and methodologies.
Attend and contribute to tender meetings and client discussions from a design perspective.
Work closely with procurement to ensure design solutions align with supply chain capabilities and project requirements.

Collaboration & stakeholder management

Build effective working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and other stakeholders.
Liaise closely with Construction, QA, Cost Control, Procurement and Contracts teams.
Ensure design decisions are communicated effectively and translated into practical construction solutions.
Manage third-party design partners and hold them accountable for agreed quality, programme and deliverables.

People & development

Mentor and develop junior engineers, graduates and trainees.
Support the continued development of our internal engineering and design capability.
Share knowledge and best practice across the wider business.
Help create a positive, collaborative design culture focused on quality, innovation and delivery.

Safety, quality & compliance

Promote a strong culture of health, safety and environmental responsibility.
Ensure relevant requirements of the Safety Management System are implemented within your area of responsibility.
Ensure design activities comply with applicable standards, legislation, client requirements and company procedures.
Support the delivery of high-quality, technically robust and buildable design solutions.

What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced engineer and design leader who can combine technical understanding, commercial awareness and strong people skills.
You’ll ideally have:

A degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline.
Professional/Chartered Engineer status, or a clear path towards it.
Significant experience in engineering design, design management or a similar senior engineering role.
Experience successfully delivering major M&E projects, ideally within complex industrial environments.
A broad multidisciplinary understanding and the ability to coordinate different engineering disciplines.
Experience managing internal design teams and external consultants/design partners.
A strong understanding of how long design activities realistically take — from concept and development through to detailed design, testing and delivery.
Experience identifying design and project risks and developing practical mitigation strategies.
Experience contributing to tenders, bids and work-winning, with an understanding of what makes a strong technical submission.
Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining focus on quality and programme.

Experience That Would Be Advantageous
Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial:

Food and beverage
Manufacturing
High-care environments
High-hazard industries
Highly regulated environments
International projects

However, we are interested in the quality and relevance of your experience rather than simply ticking every box. If you have strong design management experience in a complex engineering environment, we’d like to hear from you.
Why Join The client?
This is more than a role managing design documentation.
You’ll have the opportunity to influence how projects are designed and delivered, work alongside experienced construction and commercial teams, develop people around you and help shape the design capability of a growing business.
You’ll be joining a company that is expanding into specialist industrial markets while continuing to build strong relationships with its existing clients.
If you’re looking for a role where you can take ownership, make decisions, develop others and have a visible impact on the success of major projects, we’d like to hear from you.
