About the role
We are seeking a technically strong and highly capable Principal Power Systems Consultant to strengthen our power systems capability and support the delivery of complex grid connection and power system studies for clients across the energy sector.
This is a senior, hands-on technical role. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake and lead complex studies using industry-standard software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSCAD, while also reviewing and assuring work delivered by other members of the team. You will bring established expertise in grid code compliance and be able to provide technical guidance to both senior and developing power systems consultants.
The role will also involve working directly with clients, defining study scopes, resolving complex technical issues and contributing to proposals and the development of new work. Depending on your experience and interests, there may also be opportunities to contribute to wider projects covering grid connections, regulation, energy strategy, innovation and data analysis.
You will play an important role in maintaining and developing our technical standards, sharing knowledge across the team and supporting the continued growth of Blake Clough Consulting’s power systems services.
The Individual
The successful candidate will combine deep technical expertise with sound engineering judgement and a practical, hands-on approach. They will already be an accomplished power systems practitioner, capable of independently delivering complex studies and providing robust technical review and guidance to experienced consultants.
Required qualifications and experience:
- At least five years’ relevant experience within the electricity networks or wider energy industry.
- A master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, power systems engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Substantial hands-on experience in power system modelling and analysis, including a strong range of load flow, fault level, dynamic stability, electromagnetic transient, harmonic and grid-code compliance studies.
- Established expertise in grid-code compliance and connection requirements, with experience delivering compliance studies, interpreting technical requirements and resolving issues with network operators and other stakeholders.
- Advanced proficiency in industry-standard software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSCAD, with the ability to build, interrogate and troubleshoot complex models.
- The technical depth and judgement required to review and assure models, study methodologies, calculations and reports produced by other experienced power systems consultants.
- Proven project management skills, including defining technical scope, leading project teams, managing programmes and budgets, and delivering high-quality work to agreed timescales.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify practical solutions to complex and unfamiliar technical challenges.
- Excellent technical report-writing and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex issues clearly to clients and other stakeholders.
- A client-focused approach, with experience managing relationships and contributing to proposals and the development of new work.
- The ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to both senior and developing consultants.
Desirable additional expertise:
- Experience in specialist areas such as converter-dominated networks, low fault-level conditions, control-system interactions, sub-synchronous interactions, HVDC systems or power-electronic technologies.
- Experience developing or validating detailed OEM models for RMS and EMT studies.
- Scripting and automation experience using Python, DPL, DSL or similar languages.
- Experience working across different network operators, grid codes or international electricity markets.
- Participation in relevant industry committees, technical working groups or grid-code forums.
