About the role

We are seeking an established power systems specialist with strong US market knowledge, technical credibility and a proven ability to win consulting work.

As US Power Systems Lead, you will develop our US power systems consulting business: building client relationships, securing projects, leading technical delivery and growing a team. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who combines deep technical expertise with the commercial drive to establish and expand a service.

You will bring an established professional network and a clear understanding of where clients need specialist support. You will have significant scope to shape our offering and market priorities, drawing on Blake Clough’s international capabilities and working with colleagues across H&MV Engineering to develop opportunities.

The role will focus on power systems analysis and technical assurance for renewable generation, battery energy storage, large loads and electricity networks. You will work alongside our grid consulting colleagues, taking responsibility for the development and delivery of our power systems studies service.

Your responsibilities will include:

Identifying, developing and securing US power systems consulting opportunities, building a sustainable pipeline of client work.

Developing relationships with project developers, asset owners, utilities, independent power producers, large energy users and engineering partners.

Shaping our US power systems offering around client needs, regional requirements and emerging technical challenges.

Leading proposals, study scopes, pricing and commercial negotiations, with responsibility for project profitability and client satisfaction.

Leading and reviewing load flow, short-circuit, dynamic and transient stability, electromagnetic transient (EMT), harmonic and interconnection compliance studies.

Providing technical advice on inverter-based resources, renewable and battery storage integration, weak-grid conditions, plant controls and model performance.

Overseeing model development, validation and study submissions in accordance with applicable utility and ISO/RTO requirements.

Providing senior technical assurance and resolving complex study and modelling issues.

Drawing on our international technical team to deliver projects while recruiting, mentoring and developing US capability.

Working with Blake Clough and H&MV colleagues to develop joint opportunities and support wider client relationships.

Representing the business at industry events, technical forums and client meetings.

The Individual

You will be an established technical and commercial leader who is comfortable both discussing complex modelling issues and developing new client opportunities. You will have the credibility to act as a trusted adviser to clients and the ambition to build a consulting business.

Required qualifications and experience:

A minimum of eight years’ relevant experience in power systems engineering or consulting, including substantial experience in the US electricity sector.

Ideally a Masters level or PhD in Electrical Power Systems or a related subject.

A proven track record of originating, winning and delivering power systems consulting or engineering projects.

An established US client and industry network, with demonstrated ability to convert relationships and market opportunities into paid work.

Strong understanding of the US power systems consulting market, including client needs, procurement routes and the competitive landscape.

Strong hands-on expertise in power system modelling and analysis, with the ability to independently review complex studies and provide technical direction to experienced engineers.

Proficiency in PSS®E and/or PSLF, together with experience of PSCAD and EMT studies.

Experience delivering studies for renewable generation, battery storage or other inverter-based resources.

Detailed knowledge of interconnection study and modelling requirements in one or more US regions. ERCOT experience is particularly valued.

Working knowledge of applicable NERC reliability standards and relevant utility and ISO/RTO technical requirements.

Established client relationships and project experience in Texas and the ERCOT region.

Experience across multiple US electricity markets.

Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills.

An entrepreneurial approach and the ability to work independently while collaborating with an international team.

Location and Working Pattern

Texas is our preferred location, although we will consider strong candidates elsewhere in the United States.

We support flexible working arrangements.

The role will involve travel for client meetings, industry events and collaboration with colleagues, together with coordination across US and international time zones.

What We Offer

This is an opportunity to build and lead a US power systems consulting business with the support of an established international consultancy and the wider H&MV Engineering Group.

We offer significant scope to shape the service, develop client relationships and build a team, while retaining a strong technical role in challenging projects.

We offer a competitive base salary and performance-related incentive opportunity reflecting the seniority and commercial responsibilities of the position. Details of the US benefits package will be discussed during recruitment.
