About the role
Lead Geo-environmental Consultant – London
Whitby Wood is seeking a Lead Geo-environmental Consultant to join our interdisciplinary office in London, to lead and grow our geo-environmental engineering service.
You’ll have the backing of an established structural, civil and geotechnical team, and the freedom to shape the service around your expertise. We look for great communicators who combine practical problem-solving with technical excellence. In return, we offer a good work/life balance, opportunities for community engagement, a supportive and inclusive team culture, and genuine career development and training.
The role
You will lead contaminated land assessments and remediation strategies from Phase 1 through to verification, acting as the go-to technical voice for clients, regulators and multi-disciplinary project teams. You’ll win new clients and turn existing ones into repeat business through excellent delivery and help set the direction of our geo-environmental capability as it grows. You will also mentor junior colleagues and contribute to technical development in your field.
About you
You’re a naturally engaging person who enjoys working with others. You build rapport quickly, bring energy to project teams, and are just as comfortable collaborating with structural, civil and geotechnical engineers, architects and other consultants as you are leading a client meeting or a discussion with a regulator. You listen well, share your knowledge generously, and see strong relationships as central to great project outcomes.
Skills and experience
- A degree in environmental science, geology or a related discipline
- Strong experience managing land contamination projects including generic and detailed quantitative risk assessment (GQRA/DQRA) for human health, controlled waters and ground gas.

- Confident communication and project management skills, including the ability to explain risk clearly to clients and regulators
- A proactive, outgoing approach to building and maintaining client relationships
- Experience working within, and contributing actively to, multi-disciplinary design teams
- Chartered status (e.g. CEnv ,CSci, CWEM, CGeol)
- Experience leading or mentoring junior staff (desirable)
