About the role

At TV4, technology meets journalism, sports, entertainment and innovation.

Through TV4 Play in Sweden and MTV Katsomo in Finland, we reach around eight million people across the Nordics every week. Within Product, Tech & Operations, we build the technology that enables people to discover and enjoy our content, from streaming and playback to search and recommendations.

We are looking for a Senior Engineer, Systems & AI to work across Core and beyond, tackling some of our most complex engineering challenges. You will identify problems that span systems and teams, establish technical direction where the way forward is unclear, and turn that direction into working solutions.

This is a role for an engineer who combines broad systems thinking with deep technical judgement and a willingness to get hands-on. You will influence how we build and operate software across our engineering organisation, not just within a single team.

Before you apply

This is an office-first role based in Stockholm, with four days per week in the office.

We cannot offer visa sponsorship or relocation assistance. You must already have the right to work in Sweden and be based in Sweden.

About Core

Core builds and maintains many of the technical systems and platforms that TV4 Play and MTV Katsomo depend on. The area includes our streaming infrastructure, frontend video players, core content catalogue and platform engineering.

These systems are closely connected. Challenges often span multiple services, teams and technical domains, and solving them requires an understanding of how the pieces fit together.

You will report to the Area Lead for Core, but your work will not be limited to one team. You will operate across organisational boundaries, working with engineers and technical leaders wherever your experience can make the greatest difference.

The mandate is broad: identify gaps, challenge existing assumptions and help create a coherent technical direction across Core and, when needed, beyond it.

What you will do

You will take on engineering challenges where ownership is unclear, dependencies are complex or the right technical direction has yet to emerge.

That might mean addressing a problem that affects several systems, resolving architectural trade-offs between teams, identifying a capability the organisation is missing, or exploring how new engineering approaches can change the way we build software.

You will:

  • Identify complex technical problems that span systems and team boundaries, and establish a clear path forward.

  • Drive technical decisions across teams, bringing the relevant engineers together around sound reasoning and explicit trade-offs.

  • Move between architecture, system design and implementation, using code, prototypes and technical experiments to investigate and solve problems.

  • Recognise dependencies and risks early, particularly when no single team has the full picture.

  • Challenge established approaches when there is a better way, while understanding the operational and organisational consequences of change.

  • Share knowledge and improve the technical judgement of the wider engineering organisation.

  • Help us understand where AI and agent-driven development can change engineering practices, system design and the way we operate software.

This is not an advisory role. You are expected to contribute directly to the technical work. Your influence comes from understanding the problem, making sound decisions and helping others move forward, not from a formal management title.

AI is changing how we build software

AI is becoming an integral part of software development at TV4. Within Core, we are developing an agentic platform that will influence how engineers work and how we approach software development.

We want to understand not only how AI can make existing tasks faster, but also how agent-driven development changes the systems, tools and engineering practices we need.

You will work close to this evolution. We are looking for someone who actively experiments with AI-assisted and agent-driven development and can reason about the implications beyond the individual developer.

You will help us explore new approaches, challenge assumptions and distinguish genuine improvements from interesting experiments. The focus is on what works in practice and creates lasting value in production.

About you

You are an experienced engineer with a strong technical foundation and a track record of solving complex problems in production environments.

You are comfortable moving between technical domains, getting up to speed quickly in unfamiliar systems and digging into the details when necessary. You can see the bigger picture without losing sight of the engineering work required to make a solution real.

You have influenced technical direction beyond your immediate team. You can work with experienced engineers, challenge their assumptions and build alignment around difficult technical decisions without relying on formal authority.

You combine breadth with depth. You understand how systems interact, but you also have the technical judgement to distinguish a good abstraction from an unnecessary one, evaluate trade-offs and contribute directly to implementation.

We believe you also:

  • Have experience with architecture, system design and complex production systems.

  • Have worked with distributed systems, backend engineering, cloud infrastructure or other technically demanding environments.

  • Can identify problems that fall between existing areas of ownership and take responsibility for moving them forward.

  • Are comfortable working hands-on with code, prototypes and technical experiments when that is the best way to understand or solve a problem.

  • Can influence experienced engineers across teams through technical reasoning, collaboration and practical contribution.

  • Are curious, learn quickly and are willing to revise your approach when new information points to a better solution.

  • Have integrated AI into your development workflow and actively explore how agent-driven development is changing software engineering.

Experience with streaming, playback or audio/video technology is a plus, but not a prerequisite. What matters more is your engineering foundation, systems thinking and ability to understand a complex technical domain.

Our technical environment

Core spans a broad technical landscape, from backend services, APIs and developer platforms to video playback and the infrastructure that delivers our streams to millions of users.

Depending on the problems you work on, you may encounter:

  • Backend and systems engineering: Go, Python, Node.js and TypeScript.

  • Cloud and infrastructure: AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform and GitHub Actions.

  • Data and observability: PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, Grafana and OpenTelemetry.

  • Video and streaming: Transcoding and packaging, ABR, CDN, SSAI, DRM, codecs and streaming reliability.

  • AI and developer tooling: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and CLI/MCP-based tools.

We choose technology based on the problem we need to solve. For this role, understanding systems and architecture, making sound technical decisions and working effectively across domains matter more than deep expertise in any one specific stack.

What TV4 offers

  • The opportunity to influence technical direction across Core and beyond.

  • A senior engineering environment with substantial autonomy and short paths from ideas to decisions.

  • Complex technical challenges involving systems used by millions of people.

  • The opportunity to influence how we build software and engineering platforms as AI changes the development landscape.

  • Colleagues with strong technical expertise and a high degree of ownership.

  • A culture that values sustainable engineering solutions over quick fixes.

  • A modern office with a gym, restaurant and parking garage.

  • Collective agreement, occupational pension, insurance, wellness allowance, Benify benefits, a phone of your choice and a MacBook Pro.
