The department works collaboratively with regional specialist services to provide high-quality, integrated care for patients across the region.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Consultant with an interest in developing stroke services, contributing to clinical research, and improving outcomes for patients through evidence-based practice.

About the Service

The stroke service manages approximately 600 confirmed stroke admissions annually and provides a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • Hyperacute and acute stroke care, including thrombolysis.

  • Inpatient stroke management and rehabilitation.

  • Rapid-access transient ischaemic attack (TIA) clinics.

  • Integrated community stroke rehabilitation.

  • Multidisciplinary assessment and treatment.

  • Access to specialist neurovascular imaging and interventional services.

  • Participation in clinical research and ongoing service development.

The service benefits from a dedicated multidisciplinary team, including specialist stroke nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and other allied healthcare professionals.

There are also opportunities to participate in clinical research, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.

The Role and Responsibilities

  • Participating in hyperacute stroke services, including thrombolysis cover and the assessment of acute referrals.

  • Undertaking inpatient ward rounds and overseeing the ongoing management and rehabilitation of stroke patients.

  • Providing outpatient care through rapid-access TIA clinics and other relevant clinics.

  • Contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborating with colleagues across the stroke pathway.

  • Supporting the integrated community stroke service by providing specialist clinical advice when required.

  • Participating in the stroke consultant on-call rota, including weekday and weekend cover.

  • Contributing to clinical governance, audit, research, and continuous service improvement.

  • Providing clinical supervision, education, and training for doctors in training and other healthcare professionals.

  • Supporting the development of clinical protocols, guidelines, and service strategy.

The post is offered on a 10 PA contract, comprising direct clinical care and supporting professional activities.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), including a licence to practise.

  • MRCP or evidence of an equivalent qualification.

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in an appropriate specialty, or eligibility for a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) within six months of interview.

  • Appropriate specialist training and experience in Stroke Medicine.

  • Experience sufficient to fulfil the clinical responsibilities of the post.

  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and maintain clinical credibility with colleagues.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied clinical workload.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with patients, relatives, GPs, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.

  • A commitment to continuing professional development, clinical governance, and audit.

  • A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities and contribute to the ongoing development of the service.

Desirable Criteria

The following would be advantageous:

  • A higher degree, such as an MD or PhD.
