An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Gastroenterologist with a special interest in Hepatology to join a progressive and expanding Gastroenterology department in North West England.

The successful candidate will join a supportive, forward-thinking multidisciplinary team committed to developing gastroenterology and liver services, improving patient outcomes and transforming outpatient care. With significant investment in service development and endoscopy facilities, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to innovative clinical pathways and the continued growth of the department.

The service provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for gastroenterological conditions, with a busy, recently refurbished endoscopy unit delivering approximately 15,000 procedures annually. The department also supports regional bowel cancer screening and endoscopy training.

The post holder will have broad experience in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy, contributing to both elective and emergency services, with a particular focus on developing and delivering Hepatology services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care across Gastroenterology and Hepatology services.

  • Contribute to the management of gastroenterology inpatients and the wider emergency service.

  • Participate in the out-of-hours gastrointestinal bleeding endoscopy rota.

  • Undertake outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists and post-on-call clinics.

  • Support the development of liver services and innovative outpatient pathways.

  • Contribute to service improvement, clinical audit, research and teaching activities.

  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to improve patient care and service delivery.

  • Participate in the on-call rota, including weekend ward rounds when required.

The role offers a 10-programmed-activity job plan, including the current on-call commitment. Job plans will be reviewed within the first six months of appointment.

Essential Requirements

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

  • CCT or CESR in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine, with entry onto the Specialist Register or eligibility for inclusion within six months of the interview date.

  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.

  • Experience in gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees.

  • Experience undertaking clinical audits and an understanding of audit and research principles.

  • Strong clinical leadership, communication and organisational skills.

  • Ability to prioritise workloads, delegate effectively and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Commitment to continuing professional development, appraisal and GMC revalidation requirements.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English, alongside sound IT skills.

  • Ability to meet the requirement to live within 15 miles of the hospital or within a 30-minute drive, with a full driving licence and access to a car.

Desirable Requirements

  • Fellowship training in Hepatology.

  • A formal qualification in medical education.

  • A higher degree, such as an MD or PhD.

  • Experience in Gastroenterology service development and improvement.

  • Research experience in Gastroenterology, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Previous NHS experience and familiarity with NHS working practices and systems.

  • Active participation in British Society of Gastroenterology activities or membership of relevant specialist organisations, such as EASL or ECCO.
