About the role
System Architect
Imagine a world where a customer can walk into any shop or browse any online store and pay in installments with just a few clicks - no bank queues, no physical paperwork, and no credit card hurdles. That is the reality Leanpay has been building for ten years!
We are at the forefront of the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) trend, with a team of professionals in retail, banking and software development who are passionate about changing the old-fashioned way of buying in installments.
With our 2024 €10M Series B funding milestone, we are scaling our Romanian operations and solidifying our market leadership in Slovenia. We aren’t just offering a financial product; we are offering retailers a way to grow and customers a way to shop with total digital freedom.
Based in Serbia, our IT team is growing month by month, yet actively preserves the benefits of working in a smaller group - flexibility, informality, openness, and knowledge sharing. Over the next few years, we plan to build the next generation of our lending platform: a cloud-native core around a modern core-banking ledger, an event-driven backbone, and clear domain boundaries, all while our current platform keeps serving customers.
Currently, we are expanding our AI team and looking for a System Architect who has designed systems that move money, knows where distributed systems break, and treats security, resilience and regulation as design inputs.
If you are an experienced architect who likes to design systems that engineers and AI agents can build correctly, stays hands-on with code, and wants to shape how a fintech platform evolves, and you like what you have read so far, check out the job description below:
What will the System Architect be doing?
- Planning the evolution and structure of the platform with business needs and cost-benefit in mind, and maintaining it together with engineers;
- Dividing the platform into bounded contexts with clear ownership, contracts and data boundaries (no shared databases), so that engineers and AI agents can safely work on one part, and making sure the AI delivery process enforces this structure;
- Designing for resilience: finding and removing single points of failure, defining SLOs, RTO and RPO per critical flow, degraded modes for when a critical third party is down, and disaster recovery that is actually tested;
- Turning security and regulatory requirements, such as GDPR, into architecture, and backing audits with evidence;
- Leading business-critical and tech-critical decisions, recording them as Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and making sure they are correctly applied;
- Keeping models, diagrams and guides of the system current, so that the tech team and AI agents work from the same picture;
- Acting as custodian of the Platform Knowledge Base - setting its structure and contribution rules, prioritizing its coverage by business risk, and reviewing contributions for critical domains;
- Working with delivery teams, Team Leads and engineering management on design problems, and keeping them updated on the progress of a design;
- Choosing tools and frameworks, and assessing critical third parties (cloud, core banking, KYC, payment providers): build vs. buy, concentration risk and exit plans.
What will the successful candidate have?
- University degree with a technical orientation;
- 8+ years in software engineering, with a significant part in the architecture and system design of production systems;
- Strong knowledge of different architecture styles and the trade-offs between them;
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development, including architecture knowledge and rules that both people and AI agents can use;
- Strong problem-solving, conceptual, organizational and delegation skills;
- Clear written communication - in English;
- We consider as a plus: experience in fintech or banking, including security and regulatory requirements.
Experience in:
- Microservice architecture and distributed systems design;
- Java and Spring/SpringBoot ecosystem;
- Docker, Kubernetes and Cloud Computing Environment (Google Cloud or AWS);
- Relational Database Management Systems;
- Messaging systems (Kafka, JMS, ActiveMQ, Google Pub/Sub);
- API design.
What are the compensation and benefits?

- Hybrid working model, based in our Belgrade office;
