The Role

We are seeking an experienced Regional Logistics Manager to oversee and develop one of the UK’s leading logistics and Intermodal transport operators across the Scottish regional network, encompassing both road transport and rail freight. This is a broad operational and commercial role, combining regional site management, transport planning, customer relationship management and business performance.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for ensuring safe, compliant and cost-effective logistics operations, while developing strong relationships with key accounts, identifying opportunities for growth and driving continuous improvement across the region.

Key Responsibilities

Regional Operations Management

Oversee day-to-day logistics operations across multiple sites and regional locations, covering road transport, truck movements and rail freight services.

Ensure the efficient coordination of road and rail resources, capacity, scheduling and service delivery.

Monitor operational performance against agreed KPIs, service levels, budgets and customer commitments.

Drive improvements in productivity, vehicle and asset utilisation, operational efficiency and service reliability.

Ensure compliance with relevant transport legislation, operator licensing requirements, health and safety standards, rail procedures and company policies.

Work closely with local operations teams, transport planners, depot managers and external service providers to resolve operational challenges.

Key Account Management & Customer Relationships

Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers and strategic accounts across the region.

Act as a senior point of contact for major customers, managing service reviews, escalations and performance discussions.

Understand customer requirements and ensure logistics solutions meet operational, contractual and commercial expectations.

Identify opportunities to improve service delivery, strengthen customer retention and grow existing accounts.

Support tenders, contract renewals, pricing discussions and the development of new business opportunities.

Work collaboratively with commercial and sales teams to deliver profitable growth.

Commercial & Financial Performance

Manage regional budgets, operating costs and financial performance, ensuring delivery against agreed targets.

Monitor transport costs, subcontractor expenditure, margins and operational profitability.

Identify opportunities to reduce costs, improve efficiencies and maximise the use of road and rail networks.

Support forecasting, resource planning, budget preparation and capital investment decisions.

Ensure commercial agreements and customer contracts are delivered effectively and profitably.

Leadership & Continuous Improvement

Lead, support and develop regional operational teams, fostering a culture of accountability, safety and customer service.

Work with site managers and team leaders to establish clear objectives and drive consistent operational standards.

Support recruitment, workforce planning, training, performance management and succession planning.

Lead operational improvement projects, standardisation initiatives and the implementation of best practice across the region.

Produce regular management reports, analyse performance trends and implement corrective actions where required.

Health, Safety & Compliance

Promote a strong safety-first culture across road and rail logistics activities.

Ensure compliance with applicable road transport, driver hours, vehicle maintenance, operator licensing and rail freight requirements.

Investigate incidents, identify root causes and implement preventative measures.

Maintain effective relationships with customers, suppliers, regulatory bodies and internal compliance teams.

Candidate Requirements

Proven experience in a senior transport, logistics or regional operations management role.

Experience managing multi-site or geographically dispersed logistics operations.

Good understanding of road freight and transport operations, ideally combined with rail freight or intermodal logistics experience.

Demonstrable experience managing key accounts and senior customer relationships.

Strong commercial awareness, including budgets, cost control, profitability and contract performance.

Experience leading operational teams and influencing stakeholders across multiple locations.

Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use KPIs to drive performance.

Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills.

Sound knowledge of transport safety, compliance and operational governance.

Desirable Experience

Experience within rail freight, intermodal transport, bulk logistics or multimodal supply chains.

CPC National or International Road Haulage qualification, where relevant to the operational remit.

Experience supporting tenders, contract negotiations and new business development.

Experience managing large fleet operations, subcontractor networks or strategic logistics partnerships
