Why Join Diesta?

The Role

We’re looking for a practical, hands-on engineer to help operate and improve Diesta’s AWS platform, strengthen monitoring and observability, and make our engineering teams more effective.

Your initial focus will be helping us understand how our systems behave, detect problems earlier and resolve them faster. You’ll also improve infrastructure, deployment pipelines, development environments and automation, including the practical use of AI tools.

Working closely with our existing platform and engineering colleagues, you’ll progressively take ownership across the operational lifecycle. Over time, you should be comfortable providing cover across most day-to-day platform and DevOps responsibilities, recognising when a change needs specialist input or escalation.

What you’ll do

Monitoring, observability and reliability

  • Drive implementation and maturity of the Elastic monitoring and observability stack.

  • Improve metrics, logs, traces and dashboards across applications, infrastructure, databases and background processing.

  • Build actionable alerts with clear ownership, useful context and documented response steps.

  • Work with developers to improve instrumentation and connect technical signals to customer impact.

  • Investigate production issues across application code, containers, networking, queues and databases.

  • Help define and measure service-level objectives, reduce alert noise and turn incident findings into lasting improvements.

  • Manage telemetry access, sensitive-data handling, retention and cost.

AWS and platform operations

  • Operate and improve AWS environments across production and non-production accounts.

  • Maintain infrastructure as code using OpenTofu/Terraform and reusable modules.

  • Support containerised services, serverless workloads, networking, IAM, secrets, storage and managed databases.

  • Improve resilience, backup and recovery procedures, patching, capacity and cloud cost efficiency.

  • Contribute to security controls, operational documentation and audit evidence.

  • Support deployments, releases, rollback and recovery activities.

Developer enablement

  • Improve CI/CD pipelines, build performance, automated checks and deployment reliability.

  • Make local development, environment setup and engineering onboarding easier.

  • Build reusable scripts, tooling and self-service workflows that reduce manual work.

  • Help developers diagnose problems and understand the systems their code runs on.

  • Document operational knowledge and share ownership so the team can work effectively without depending on one person.

AI enablement

  • Help engineers and other colleagues adopt approved AI tools effectively.

  • Build and maintain practical AI-assisted workflows for development, troubleshooting, documentation and routine operations.

  • Contribute reusable instructions, skills and integrations that connect AI tools to useful organisational context.

  • Apply appropriate permissions, data protection, human review and validation.

  • Assess whether AI-assisted workflows deliver reliable results and measurable time savings.

What you’ll bring

  • Typically 5–10 years of relevant experience, including hands-on responsibility for production systems.

  • Strong practical AWS experience, including IAM, networking, compute, storage and managed databases.

  • Experience maintaining infrastructure as code with Terraform or OpenTofu.

  • Experience building and operating monitoring and observability using Elastic and other tools such as CloudWatch, Grafana, Prometheus or equivalents.

  • Confidence investigating incidents using metrics, logs and traces, and following a problem across multiple system layers.

  • Experience with Docker, CI/CD, Git-based workflows and Linux troubleshooting.

  • Ability to write maintainable automation in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Bash or similar languages, and read application code when diagnosing issues.

  • Practical experience using AI assistants or automation tools to improve engineering workflows, including checking their output.

  • Clear communication, sound judgement and a willingness to document and share what you learn.

  • The ability to prioritise planned improvements alongside operational support.

Useful additional experience

  • AWS ECS/Fargate, Lambda, Step Functions, SQS, EventBridge and RDS MySQL.

  • Node.js/NestJS, TypeScript and Python applications.

  • Bitbucket Pipelines and AWS deployment tooling.

  • OpenTelemetry, application performance monitoring, database performance analysis or Percona Monitoring and Management.

  • Multi-account AWS environments, disaster-recovery exercises and security or compliance work.

  • AI tool integrations, MCP, reusable agent skills or evaluating AI-assisted workflows.

  • SaaS platforms handling sensitive financial or customer data.

We value transferable experience and good engineering judgement. You do not need to have used every technology in our stack.

What success looks like

Within your first six months, you’ll have:

  • Taken ownership of agreed AWS services and routine platform operations.

  • Improved visibility into critical services and workflows, with useful dashboards, actionable alerts and tested runbooks.

  • Delivered measurable improvements to developer setup, build or deployment workflows.

  • Shipped at least one useful, validated AI-assisted workflow.

  • Demonstrated that you can independently handle common operational issues and provide reliable cover across a growing share of the platform remit.
