Job Description:

Our client is looking to appoint a Senior Database Developer & DBA to provide database administration, database development and technical leadership across their Oracle and SQL Server environments. The role will support both strategic development projects and the ongoing operation of business-critical databases and associated applications.

You will provide technical resilience and succession planning for existing database knowledge, take ownership of database standards and best practice, and work closely with stakeholders across the business to develop robust and scalable data solutions.

A key aspect of the role is supporting the longer-term migration of core business systems from Oracle to SQL Server, so the role combines database administration, database development, performance optimisation and strategic technical planning. Working as a senior member of the Development team, you will lead database-related initiatives, provide expert guidance to colleagues and contribute to the future direction of the organisation's data architecture.

Skills/Experience:

  • A relevant IT-related degree, such as Computer Science, Mathematics or Information Systems, or equivalent commercial experience gained within enterprise database environments.
  • Extensive knowledge of Oracle and SQL Server technologies, including both database administration and database development.

  • Oracle Database Administration experience.
  • SQL Server Database Administration experience.
  • Oracle PL/SQL development experience.
  • SQL Server T-SQL development experience.
  • Database performance tuning and optimisation.
  • Backup, recovery and disaster recovery experience.
  • Experience supporting business-critical production environments.
  • Experience working with large and complex datasets.
  • A technically credible subject matter expert, capable of advising the business on database best practice, performance optimisation, resilience and future database architecture.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, in writing, verbally and face to face, with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, with a discreet and confidential approach.
  • Prioritises and manages time effectively, works across multiple projects and stakeholders, delivers to agreed deadlines and standards, and balances operational support with project delivery, with ownership and accountability.
  • Oracle to SQL Server migration experience would be an advantage.
  • Azure SQL technologies would be an advantage.
  • SSIS would be an advantage.
  • PowerShell scripting would be an advantage.
  • Microsoft Excel, including VBA, would be an advantage.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Administer Oracle and SQL Server database environments.
  • Manage backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes.
  • Monitor database performance, availability and capacity.
  • Maintain database security, access controls and governance standards.
  • Ensure the stability and resilience of business-critical database platforms.
  • Design, develop and maintain PL/SQL and T-SQL solutions.
  • Create and support stored procedures, packages, functions and database scripts.
  • Develop solutions for large and complex datasets.
  • Deliver reporting, data extraction and integration solutions.
  • Implement database enhancements across business systems.
  • Analyse and optimise database performance.
  • Implement indexing, query tuning and database best-practice techniques.
  • Investigate and resolve database performance issues.
  • Recommend improvements to database architecture and standards.
  • Ensure efficient use of database resources.
  • Support business-critical Oracle and SQL Server applications.
  • Investigate and resolve database and data-related incidents.
  • Liaise with users, IT teams and third-party suppliers on database-related matters.
  • Provide expert database support across the organisation.
  • Maintain technical documentation relating to database environments.
  • Support the organisation's Oracle-to-SQL Server migration strategy.
  • Contribute to future database architecture and technology planning.
  • Establish and promote database development and administration best practice.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring within the Development team.
  • Support strategic projects involving data, reporting and platform transformation.
