About the role
CAMHS ASD Assessor
Contract | CAMHS Professionals | Nationwide |
An autism diagnosis can change everything for a young person. Your nursing background and assessment skills are what make that happen.
CAMHS Professionals are specialist mental health recruiters, and we are always looking for experienced CAMHS ASD Assessors from a nursing background to join our UK-wide network on a contract basis. If you have the clinical skills, training, and experience to assess autism in children and young people to a high standard — we have the contracts.
What the role actually looks like
- CAMHS neurodevelopmental assessment services
- Specialist autism diagnostic clinics
- Tier 3 community CAMHS teams with ASD pathways
- NHS and independent diagnostic services
- Multi-agency neurodevelopmental hubs
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Conducting comprehensive autism assessments for children and young people using gold-standard diagnostic tools including ADOS-2 and ADI-R
- Gathering multi-informant clinical histories from parents, carers, schools, and other involved professionals
- Integrating assessment findings with wider clinical information to contribute to diagnostic formulations within the MDT
- Participating in diagnostic consensus meetings alongside psychiatrists, psychologists, and speech and language therapists
- Producing detailed, high-quality written diagnostic reports to agreed standards and timescales
- Communicating diagnostic outcomes sensitively and clearly to young people, families, and carers
- Supporting post-diagnostic pathways including psychoeducation, signposting, and onward referral
- Contributing to waiting list management and assessment pathway development where required
- Maintaining accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC and organisational standards
- Attending and contributing to peer supervision, quality assurance, and service development activities
What we need from you —
Essential:
- Active NMC registration (Mental Health or Children’s nursing field) — no restrictions or conditions
- Formal training in ADOS-2 administration and scoring (certificate required)
- Formal training in ADI-R administration and scoring (certificate required)
- Demonstrable experience conducting autism assessments in a CAMHS or neurodevelopmental setting
- Strong clinical report writing skills — able to produce clear, detailed, and family-accessible diagnostic reports
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)
- Up-to-date mandatory training including BLS and safeguarding children Level 2+
- Sound knowledge of autism presentations across genders, developmental stages, and co-occurring conditions
Desirable (but not always required):
- Experience with co-occurring presentations such as ADHD, anxiety, learning disability, or sensory processing difficulties
- Competency in additional neurodevelopmental assessment tools (e.g. ABAS, VABS, cognitive screening)
- Experience presenting findings at diagnostic feedback meetings and supporting families post-diagnosis
- Supervisory or mentorship experience within a CAMHS or neurodevelopmental setting
- Knowledge of local and national autism diagnostic frameworks including NICE guidelines and the Autism Act
What you’ll get from us:
- Contract rates that are genuinely competitive — no vague promises
- Flexible contract lengths — short, long, rolling, you decide
- One dedicated consultant who specialises in your field — not a generalist with a list
- Fast, hassle-free compliance and onboarding
- Access to contracts not advertised on the general job boards
- Real ongoing support throughout your placement — not just at the start
ADOS-2 and ADI-R trained, NMC registered, and ready for your next CAMHS assessment contract?
