About the role

Blue Light Card. Individually great, together unstoppable

The Role and the Team

A growing team, a modern serverless foundation and a blank canvas: there has rarely been a better moment to join the tech team at Blue Light Card. As we complete our replatforming project, we're turning to new work that will reshape the app experience for our members, and our cross functional team sits right at the heart of it.

We're looking for an Android developer to design and build our native Android experience using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. You'll work closely with product managers, designers and backend engineers, and be part of our mobile community of practice, sharing ideas and helping us raise the bar for how we build for Android.

If you enjoy shaping ideas in a supportive, collaborative team and care about creating intuitive apps that make a difference to our members, we'd love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Build native Android features with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, writing highly readable code that members will enjoy using

  • Collaborate with product managers, designers and backend engineers to define and deliver features that support the overall product vision

  • Design solutions that meet functional and non-functional requirements, following Blue Light Card architectural standards

  • Write clean, maintainable and testable code, and take part in code reviews to uphold coding standards and best practices

  • Implement and maintain unit tests and UI tests, and diagnose and fix bugs or performance bottlenecks to improve the member experience

  • Support automated build, test and deployment processes so that releases are smooth and rapid

  • Contribute to the mobile community of practice, sharing ideas and championing good practice across the wider Blue Light Card team

  • Document technical requirements, specifications and choices to build a clear, shared knowledge base

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong Kotlin skills and demonstrable experience building modern, intuitive UIs with Jetpack Compose

  • A solid understanding of Android fundamentals, including the app lifecycle, Coroutines and Flow, ViewModel-based architecture such as MVVM or MVI, and dependency injection, ideally with Koin

  • Experience testing Android apps with unit tests and Compose UI tests, with an eye for performance and accessibility

  • Experience using GitHub and GitHub Actions for CI/CD, alongside Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase App Distribution for monitoring app stability and pre-release testing

  • Familiarity with integrating Android SDKs for services such as Amplitude, Braze and Stripe, and an understanding of server-driven UI concepts

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues, mentor junior developers and encourage continuous learning

  • Experience releasing apps through Google Play Console would be a bonus, but is not essential

Our Culture

Our mission is simple: make heroes happy. Our members are real-life heroes who keep us all safe, cared for, and thriving. It's what gets us up in the morning, what makes us want to think bigger, and create something that truly matters. By focusing on their happiness, we create amazing experiences, deliver unrivalled discounts, innovative products, and world-class service.

We don't just follow the usual path - we look for smarter, bolder ways to deliver real impact. We take ownership, move fast, and work shoulder to shoulder to build something special.

We promote hybrid working, and value in-person collaboration so encourage time in our offices – either the HQ in Leicestershire, or London, Holborn office. The frequency and office location will vary depending on the role and team. We aim to be flexible, but we aren't able to offer fully remote working.

Blue Light Card is an equal opportunities employer. We're committed to building a diverse and inclusive team where different perspectives and experiences help us grow, innovate, and better reflect the communities we serve. We make recruiting decisions based on your experience and skills. In the event of a high number of applications, we'll prioritise candidates who meet both the essential and desirable criteria for the role.
