Alan Boswell Group apprenticeship scheme

As an insurance and financial planning group with over 40 years experience, our longevity and reputation are the result of doing things a little differently, going the extra mile for our people and our clients.

We have offices across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and Lincolnshire and employ over 450 dedicated staff. The Group prides itself on its reputation for exceptional customer service to over 70,000 clients.

Our apprenticeship scheme has been running since 2010, and we encourage applicants throughout the year. You will undertake an apprenticeship alongside your role to gain your professional qualification within general insurance.

Our apprenticeship scheme aims to provide you with a professional and friendly environment in which you can develop your career and become the next generation of Alan Boswell Insurance Brokers employees.

You would be based in either our Norwich, Cambridge or Ipswich office, in a permanent full-time role, with a competitive salary and career progression.

Alice Legood, 2018 apprentice

"I originally applied because I wanted a structured role where I could build a long-term career, and the company stood out as an excellent place to work, offering great staff benefits and a supportive, friendly atmosphere. I learnt so much during my apprenticeship, from finance options and commercial risks to renewal processes. Working at ABG also developed my interpersonal skills, particularly how to communicate with confidence. From the start, I was doing the same work as everyone else and never felt like “just an apprentice” – I was part of the team. That gave me a realistic view of the job and made me feel truly valued.

Since completing my apprenticeship, I’ve progressed from personal lines into the commercial handlers team, currently in the role of Executive Handler. Each step has brought new challenges and opportunities for growth, especially through interaction with the rest of the commercial team and handling complex cases. I’m enjoying not only the challenges, but also the continued opportunity to develop my skills, having since completed the Certificate in Insurance (CertCII), Diploma in Insurance (DipCII), and Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII)."

FAQs

The apprenticeship scheme is over a period of two years, although you will be contracted as a permanent employee from day one. Within that time, you’ll have first-hand experience working in a variety of departments to understand what the insurance industry is all about, including:

  • Personal lines – such as car and home insurance

  • Commercial – insurance for businesses

  • Claims – how we handle insurance when something goes wrong

  • Underwriting – the wording of policies and schemes

As part of the apprenticeship scheme, you will have 20% of your work time dedicated to focusing and developing the required skills, knowledge, and behaviours to achieve your qualification.

We offer a competitive apprentice salary, a minimum of £18,000 per annum, and our trainees are employed on a full-time, permanent basis, so you will also receive company benefits, including:

  • Pension contributions

  • Medical cash plan

  • Eligibility to our discretionary Group bonus

  • Holidays and sick pay

  • Bonus on achieving your Cert CII

We will fund your studies to achieve Insurance Practitioner Level 3, incorporating an End Point Assessment. You will be given training and hands-on experience to gain qualifications without attending university. The apprenticeship will also support you in studying for the Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) certificate, helping you gain a professional qualification within 18 months of joining the Group.

This is just the beginning of training with Alan Boswell Group – we are proud of our people and their contribution to our business, so we provide support and training throughout your whole career with us.

Your personal qualities are important to us – we want to employ a person, not a robot!

We are looking for someone who is:

  • An enthusiastic and motivated team player

  • Willing to learn, grow, and help out

  • Approachable, positive, and focussed

  • Passionate about succeeding, with a desire to start a career within insurance

  • Proud to maintain a high standard of work with good attention to detail

  • Good with technology and confident talking to people

  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and embracing change

Of course, these are all the qualities we’d love you to bring to the Group but don’t worry if you’re not sure – we’ll coach you and develop these skills throughout the trainee scheme and your apprenticeship.

As part of the trainee scheme, we would like you to have the following qualifications as a minimum: five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (including English and Maths).

From day one, you will be trained on our insurance products and systems so that you are working as one of the team, as any other new staff member would be. Initially trained in one product, within a few weeks, you will be working with your colleagues and speaking to our customers. You will be responsible for quoting new business, renewing policies, and office administration as part of building a wide base of core insurance broking skills.

Throughout this scheme, you will continue to build on your technical skills and develop your insurance product knowledge, leading you to specialise in one of our many departments throughout the business.

You will also be working towards your industry professional CII qualifications.

I applied for an apprenticeship as I wanted to gain experience in a professional environment, and I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career. Since I joined, I have learnt how in-depth conflicted liability can be in terms of motor claims, the importance of good organisation, keeping on top of work, and how day-to-day life impacts your insurance. I really enjoy being part of a team in an office environment.
